General Information on Hyde Park

Hyde Park is situated in the northwest part of Dutchess County, south of Rhinebeck and on the east bank of the Hudson River. It is a large town consisting of one hamlet, Staatsburgh, and a few communities. It spreads out without an obvious center. Generally speaking, the north part of Hyde Park, near Rhinebeck and Clinton, is less developed and has a small town look with beautiful country roads and open lands. Staatsburg represents this characteristic very well. From the middle section to the south, Hyde Park is rather developed and populated, blending into the city of Poughkeepsie

Real Estate

Once Upon a Time…

Hyde Park was called “Stoutenburgh” in the early days named after one of first settlers. “Hyde Park” was the name of an estate in town named in honor of Edward Hyde, an early governor of New York, also known as Lord Cornbury. Legend has it that in 1804 a tavern owner, in order to boost his slow business, named his tavern “Hyde Park Inn” and applied for a mail box to be placed at his business. As his request was nothing out of the ordinary then, the “Hyde Park Post Office” was granted. In time, the area was referred as “Hyde Park”, and the change was official in 1812.
