· The most prominent physical feature in Pine Plains is Stissing Mountain, visible just about anywhere in the hamlet of Pine Plains. It rises 1,403 feet from the flat surrounding local areas and offers some of the best sceneries in the Hudson Valley: to the west as far as the Catskill Mountains and the Taconic ridge in the east. Stissing Mountain can be climbed in less than an hour from the bottom to a historic fire tower on the top.
· The mountain is located in the Stissing Lake Recreation Park, which provides the public access to the mountain and lake. Stissing Lake is clear, excellent for swimming and boating. A 450-acre forest is also open to the public with permits. Also at the foot of Stissing Mountain lies the 500-acre uniquely wondrous Thompson Pond Nature Preserve. With more than 245 identified species of land plants, 142 wetland plant species, 162 species of birds and 27 mammal species, the preserve is a wonderland to explore. Open to the public from dawn to dusk for passive recreational activities and educational uses only, this preserve, a state migratory bird refuge, is ideal for bird watching, hiking and cross-country skiing with about 3 miles of trails around the preserve. There are several trails alongside the 100-arce pond. Stunning pictures of this preserve can be captured from the top of Stissing Mountain. Considered an excellent example of a calcareous wetland, Thompson Pond-Stissing Mountain ecosystem has been was designated a National Natural Landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior in 1973. There is also a third lake, Twin Island Lake, which is called “Mud Pond” by the locals to refer to its unswimmable condition.
· Located in one corner of the main intersection of Pine Plains is the Stissing House, a tavern and restaurant open since 1782. It is considered the oldest and longest operated restaurant in America. The food is delicious and the service is professional. The atmosphere is cozy, friendly, and nostalgic. In fact, Stissing House is in the center of Pine Plains’ social life as a gathering place and probably the most well-known business in Pine Plains.
